Railroads > flbtrain  > Railroads > I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THE RAILROAD > Louisiana & Delta
Shortly after returning from Saudi in September 1986 I accepted the position of General Manager of the new shortline - Louisiana & Delta. GWI was acquiring some of SP's branch lines in Louisiana and I was responsible for staffing, equipment acquisition, training and starting up LDRR. I managed LDRR successfully for 14 years at which time I left and became General Manager of the Arizona Eastern in Globe, AZ.

Louisiana & Delta Jon NI1 CF7 1501 pulls loads from International Salt Co. on Avery Island, LA. 5/31/1989. Top brass at GWI thought that the salt business was the cornerstone to LDRR existence. It was not to be. Actually the sale business was a major loser financially for LDRR.

Louisiana & Delta Job NI1, led by CF7 1501, is eastbound over LDRR's lift span bridge over the Delcambre Canal, Delcambre, LA. 10/25/1990. The controls for the lift bridge were on the west side (left in the picture). LDRR did not have bridge tenders and the train crews were responsible for opening and closing the bridge for train movement. Whichever member of the train crew was working the ground that day was generally the one who walked across the canal on the highway bridge to get to the controls and operated it.
LDRR purchased eight (8) CF7s from Kansas City Southern to be used at CMC's Dayton, TX plastics SIT yard. LDRR had been awarded the contract to provide switching services to Southern Pacific at CMC's yard. Here the 8 units are running light on their way to New Iberia for inspection, repairs and painting. Bayou Sale, LA, 2/25/1994.
Louisiana & Delta Job BY1, powered by CF7 1502, running on the SP main from Bayou Sale crosses the Bayou Teche bridge at Baldwin, LA. 7/6/1994. BY1 was based in Baldwin. The Job worked the Bayou Sale Branch which had to carbon black plants on it - Cabot and Columbian.
Former SP bay window caboose 4613 was acquired by LDRR to be rebuilt into a training and safety car LDRR #1. 4613 was inspected by LDRR personnel in Oregon and moved to New Iberia for repairs and modification. SP gave the car to LDRR and moved it to Louisiana at no cost. New Iberia, LA 8/24/1994.

Former SP bay window caboose 4613 acquired by LDRR to be used as training and safety car LDRR#1. Interior of the "working" end of the car shows on the right, the TV/VCR, company radio for communication, AM/FM radio and desk area. Dennis Pickering is working on the bakc side of the electical equipment closet. Behind the electrical closet was a small stoage closet. On the left side is the sink and cabinet, with small refrigerator. There was room below the sink for ice chests or other boxes, etc. The car had ten (10) captain chairs with small portable tables which were used for personnel being trained, staff meetings, inspection trips, etc. Some members of GWI management never understood how important the car was to our operations and training.
